I have been integrating digital technologies into classrooms since the last century. I have long seen the positive impact on learning potential that technology can have on students. Used well, technology is a force for massive educational change, but equally, used poorly and the same technology has the potential to have the opposite effect. This is I why I am so passionate to work in class, alongside teachers, so that I can team teach and model effective digital technology pedagogy with them and enable teachers to grow and become passionate about effectively integrating digital technologies into their own practice and classrooms.
I started out as a classroom teacher. I trained as a teacher in the UK and have been a registered teacher in New Zealand since 2001. My progression to specialist digital learning facilitator has followed the following path:
Hertfordhshire Local Education Authority technology adviser
Head of IT and digital technology curriculum design – St Edmund’s School for Girls’
Head of IT – Howick Intermediate
Director of IT – Meadowbank Primary
E-Learning facilitator (secondary) – Team Solutions, University of Auckland
Director of dakinane limited – established 2008
Accredited PLD facilitator – Ministry of Education
Accredited DT/HM facilitator – Ministry of Education
Sharp, Kinane Limited
Once Jacqui Sharp and I became accredited MoE facilitators we decided to create a new company, Sharp, Kinane Limited. We share the same educational ideals and saw that collaboration would allow us to offer our combined services to more teachers all over New Zealand. We do not do “off the shelf” one size fits all solutions and instead offer to schools, through their PLD contracts, high quality, innovative and bespoke digital learning professional development. We currently manage over 30 centrally funded PLD and DT/HM contracts for the MoE, working in Northland, Auckland, Waikato, Taranaki and Westland. We currently have four accredited facilitators working under our guidance to ensure that we provide the highest quality support to teachers. We aim to increase this number of facilitators in 2019 to enable us to continue to provide high quality and innovative PLD to teachers and schools throughout the country.
The Learning Zone
At The Learning Zone, we have
In collaboration with Mark Rowlinson, Head of Technology at Northcross Intermediate, we have set up a Maker Camp for students from years 5-9. This 4 day camp runs most school holidays throughout the year.
Maker Camp is based on the constructionist philosophy of Gary Stager and Sylvia Martinez, it is a space where students are encouraged to investigate whimsy, immerse or lose themselves in a project or idea that they want to follow. In short we create an atmosphere or a series of opportunites for students to have some hard fun, challenging themselves.
Almost since the start of the magazine over 10 years ago, I have been a regular contributor to Interface Magazine. You can read a selection of those articles by clicking on the Interface logo below.
